What Are My Siding Shape, Color, and Trim Options?

One of the reasons Holeman decided to install James Hardie brand siding exclusively is the wide range of options the manufacturer makes available. James Hardie engineers its fiber cement siding to take on various textures and absorb rich coloring that will last for decades. Homeowners can choose complementary or contrasting trim styles and colors, opt for vertical or horizontal siding, incorporate various shapes and styles to match their home’s architecture and their family’s personalities.

Siding Trim Options

As a James Hardie Elite Preferred contractor, Holeman adheres to the manufacturer’s strict installation standards. We are intimately familiar with Hardie siding and can help you select the product that matches your style, whether you live in a traditional, contemporary, or modern home; whether you want to evoke Cape Cod, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, or any other era and geography.

With all the options available, it pays to make your selection methodically. Here are the variables to consider:

Siding Size, Shape, and Orientation

Hardie siding comes in boards, panels, and planks ranging from 4 feet to 12 feet long, depending on the aesthetic required and the look to be captured. Here are the most popular models:

  • Lap Siding – The most commonly popular fiber cement siding in South Florida, lap siding is the easiest to install, thanks to its 144-inch sheets and 8 ¼-inch board widths. It comes in your choice of traditional cedar wood grain or smooth texture for a modern appearance.
  • Shingles (aka Shakes) – Reminiscent of New England’s cedar shingles without the susceptibility to the damp, shingle siding is full of character, whether you choose standard straight-edge or special-order staggered-edge design.
  • Textured Panels – These versatile panels can be styled with various textures. Sand is similar to a fine-textured drywall finish. Knockdown looks strikingly similar to stucco. Multi-groove incorporates scored architectural lines for a more modern feel. All textures can be installed vertically or horizontally for even greater design flexibility.
  • Vertical Siding – Give your home a rustic look incorporating vertical cedar grain. Or choose a more contemporary look, with a smooth finish. Vertical siding can be beautifully offset with Hardie trim options and a variety of premium texture choices.
  • Artisan Collection – Thicker boards cast dark horizontal shadows, giving the home’s facade a dramatic contrast and substantiality. This premium product’s added dimension creates a sense of authenticity in historic homes and a sense of luxury in contemporary models.

Siding Trim Options

As noted, various trims create an especially beautiful look when used with vertical siding. But trim is a great way to accentuate any siding type, giving special contrasting color highlights to corners, windows, gables, friezes, columns, and other architectural features. Trim is available in standard 3½-inch and 5½-inch widths and Hardie accepts special orders for trim widths up to 11¼ inches. Like the siding options, standard trims include woodgrain and smooth textures. Other options include 2½-inch batten boards with accentuated grains.
